Well, well, well; Messenger is finally joining Instagram and WhatsApp as Meta’s (previously known as The Facebook Group) encrypted messaging platforms. But what does this mean? Is your safety protected or exposed? If you want more detailed information about this, keep reading!

Meta’s Statements Regarding The Chats & Calls Encryption
When you’re handling your user’s safety and privacy, having a clean communication method is essential. That’s why, following the announcement of the encrypted updates, people in charge of the project from every party made many public statements.
Starting with Moxie Marlinspike, founder of Signal Foundation, who worked in the encryption protocol “Open Whisper Systems” creating encryption for WhatsApp, said:
“Starting today, we’re starting to roll out end-to-end encryption for all communications between our users. (…) Every call (you make) will be encrypted, as well as every message you send or receive. “
On the other hand, Andrew Byrne, policy manager at Facebook Ireland, stated that: “Encryption is just one of the tools we use to fight abuse.”
But What Does Encryption Mean?
Encryption ensures that only people in a conversation can read the messages sent back and forth, nobody else. For example, your internet service provider or anyone who might be listening in on your connection can’t read your texts.
The Ups And Downs Of Encryption
Encryption may be useful against hackers or attackers who access accounts, searching for specific and delicate information. If you think about it, whatever you say or send is protected, like your credit card or social security numbers.
The downside of encryption is that keeping it real, criminals use it too. And, in the same way, your information won’t be available to anyone who wants it; police won’t be able to access that data so easily either. Some apps, like WhatsApp, have been accused of obstructing police labor because of their encrypted data.
Encryption has both advantages and drawbacks. It has facilitated crime and terrorism, but it allows us to be more secure as individuals.
